How To Stop a Cat Urinating In House
Is your cat urinating in house? Welcome to Stop Cats Peeing, I’ve set this website up specially to help people to overcome the distressing problem of “how to stop a cat urinating in the house“. Along with the equally offensive issue of “how to get rid of cat urine smell”.
Every cat owner has their share of problems with their pets. Their cats will scratch the furniture, aggression, constant meowing, but the most difficult problem of all is a cat urinating in the house. It can make life with your beloved pet miserable:
- The strong smell of cat pee all over the house
- The smell seeming to cling to your clothes
- It’s too embarrassing to have friends to the house
- You may even consider getting rid of your cat
Can you imagine anything worse than your cat peeing or pooing on your pillow? This is what happened two days after my boyfriend moved into my house, the cat toileted on his pillow! I wonder what the cat was trying to tell me?
If your cat starts inappropriate toilet habits, they are trying to tell you something, but it may not always be clear what they are saying.

So if you own a cat, at some point behavioural problems are a possibility, especially if your cat was not trained properly from a young age, or if something has changed in the house that upsets your cat
There are thee main reasons why cats urinate in house:
0
Cat Behavioral Problems:
0
Cats are very sensitive animals and will often develop behavioral problems, including urinating in the house, for any number of “emotional” reasons such as:
- A change in their environment, such as home improvements
- New people in the home, even if they are only guests
- A new pet, such as a second cat
- If you are feeling stressed
- The arrival of a new baby, (this particularly needs to be addressed quickly)
If your cat is distressed for this type of reason punishing them, maybe by rubbing their nose in the cat pee or smacking them, will confuse them and make it almost impossible for them to learn new behaviour. In fact it may make the problem worse.

TIP: If your cat continually pees in one spot on the carpet, even after you have thoroughly cleaned the spot, try putting a piece of foil over the area. Stick the foil down with masking tape. Your cat will hate the feel of the foil under their feet. Eventually they will learn not to go near that place.

Cat Medical Problems:
0
When a cat is suffering from medical problems it often first shows itself with toilet problems. If a cat is ill, with urinary tract infections or the effects of old age it can become difficult or painful for your cat to pee. When the cat begins to associate pain with it’s litter box, they will begin to become anxious and fearful of going to the toilet. A cat doesn’t understand that it’s sick and that’s what the pain is, he will just try to avoid the pain by not going to the place it happened; simple stimulus and response.

TIP: Try feeding your cat wet food as well as keeping a bowl of fresh, clean water somewhere quite and easily accessible. The more liquid your cat takes in naturally the more often they will pee. This may sound contra to stopping your cat peeing in the house, however, the more urine your cat produces, they will flush out any “crystals” and help improve your cats wellness.

Environmental Problems:
0
As said before cats can be sensitive and shy, and if there is something in their environment that they don’t like, it can upset them and cause your cat to urinate in your home. It is particular important to remember this with the management of your cats litter box. If your cat isn’t happy with their toilet they probably won’t use it:
- If the litter box is dirty
- An insufficient number of litter boxes
- The litter box is physically difficult to use or access
- Too much litter in the box, cats like about 2 inches
- The type of cat litter, the cat will prefer soft litter
- The location of the litter box

TIP: Place a litter box under a table, out of site. Put your cat inside a few times, so they know where it is. If your cat does a poo somewhere wrong, scoop it up and put it into the litter tray. Then place your cat in the litter tray. They will catch on!

The horrendous cat urine smell pervades through everything and is incredibly difficult to remove. Also if the urine is not completely removed the cat will return to the spot and pee again to refresh their territory mark. So for many reasons it is vital that you completely remove cat urine smell.
Tip:Don’t use chemical cleaners that contain Amonia, it will make the situation worse and your cat will smell the Amonia and pee there again!

Nice work. Please keep working on. Thank you very much.
Hi dude, I came from warrior forum, your site looks good. You have given out good information about cats, keep it up.
Gold! you save my day
Very interesting. Sometimes the question of how do you train cats to use the litter box is difficult to answer, but this is a good overview. Of course, always make sure it’s not health-related first, but some good positive reinforcement is often very effective.
Help my cat will not stop peeing in my floor registers. What can I do????
I have the same problem. Has anyone responded to your question?
Thanks for the info, we’ll give everything a go! We already do try to be clean and clean his litterbox regularly but we are pretty certain he just pees on everything to show his dominance over the other cat (even as a 10-week old kitten he would push the older cat from its food). Can this be cured? There seems to be no pattern to where or when he pees but just does so on anything made of fabric on the floor or where he can reach, so even washing baskets full of clean laundry on kitchen worktops are fair game when we’re not looking. He has recently been castrated and hoped that would help but no. Any more tips?? Thanks
HELP Desperately need some advice – my 3 year old cat has been urinating and has defecated
on my leather sofas !! he urinates on the same one all the time, he has a litter tray . He tends to use the sofa in the day !???? I have cleaned, scrubbed, sprayed and steam cleaned the floor underneath and all the sponge but the smell is obviously still there as he keeps going back !! Have read about making an orange spray as the smell of bleach and other such products may still smell like wee to him !!!
Cats hat the smell of oranges, so if he uses just one spot repeatedly, it would deter him from going there. However, he may just start using somewhere else! Try to work out what is causing this behavior.
Spot test the leather before putting anything on it. Good Luck…
Please help, my 15 year old mog has the run of the house and a catflap. I understand why she peed on the bed after my new boyfriend stayed, especially as he has a tomcat, but now she’s started going anywhere she likes including the sofa where I sit. My boyfriend has only been to the house twice since crimbo as and the places she is going can’t possibly have his smell. She had problems with a local tomcat who hangs around outside but he can’t get in. She’s in excellent health but I’m having to lock her in the kitchen which I’m sure we both hate!!
Help! I have a 3 year old female spayed cat. She has been peeing in my son’s bed, I was able to put a stop to that. I had to bring in a car seat, she has peed in there twice in one day, right in front on me!!
I scolded her, threw her outside, brought her back after and hour, showed her the mess, scolded her again. I have just put tinfoil in the car seat to deffer her. I don’t want to have any more cat urine. Her litter box is clean, she uses it.
Nothing has changed. She does not have the FUI, up to date with her shots. Healthy otherwise.
I can’t have her peeing on everything. My kids are older, 3 and 5, but they do not need to have their items defecated on! Surrendering her is NOT an option.
My 3 year old cat named midgie pee on the floor at night and spray around the tv during the day. We constantly fight about what to do about it. We have finally had to get new carpet. I have tried everything to stop her but my parents think we should get rid of her. I rencenly lost a beloved cat about 4 years ago because of a kidney problem and he could not help going on the floor. I can’t risk losing another cat and I need a solution fast please help!
Girlfriends female cat has begun peeing in dining room, began about the time I started spending a lot of time there. The cat seems to like me and I always talk to her and pet her, I have fed her a few times too.
Tried the foil thing. Yesterday I watched her slowly walk across the foil, hating every step, only to pee on the foil.
We have cleaned the spots well and used citrus cleaners, which is supposed to discourage them. No luck. GF is considering putting her down. Any advise?
I have 3 cats. A 3 year old female, 10 yr old female, brother of My 10 yr old male cat and HE is the only one out of the 3 who I have caught ‘marking’ his pee in the house. Mailt the hallway so I have to keep cleaing it will lemon Flash and spraying fabreeze everyday when I come home. It’s awlful. He is rather vocal when I come home and although I used to have litter trays they all seem to venture off outside to do their toiletting. The truth is even with a litter tray,he kept marking areas, anywhere like a cabinet, next to a radiator, now it’s on the kitchen worktop right by my BT socket, hence my crackly phoneline!!
Am I wrongin assuming they just pee outside?
I have had other cats in the area but this has been on and off over the ears so I can’t put it down to anything specific. The other change isthat my husband moved out 6weeks ago and I have a lodger…but this peeing whas been going on for a few years…HELP!!
